How to choose a cross-country ski jacket?

In cross-country skiing, it is important to wear a maximum of 3 layers: an undergarment that expels perspiration, a midlayer (optional, depending on the temperature) and a coat with different levels of protection against the cold. To find the right coat, one must begin by asking what level of heat we want for our coat. Do we prefer to have a warmer coat that can also be worn later in the season and add a layer on cold days? Or are we rather chilly so we prefer to remove a layer when it is warmer?

Less warm coats

There are different levels of breathability in less warm coats. For maximum ventilation, there are coats with a windproof front and a mesh back (wick). Spectrum 2.0 by Bjorn Daehlie is one example. Thus, the front that receives all the wind will be protected from the cold and the back, where we sweat more, will remain dry. This type of coat is designed for training. It is therefore normal that you get cold before and after training. That's why we sell very warm, compact, lightweight and breathable coats. These are very popular before and after the cross-country ski outings.

If you're looking for a slightly more insulated coat, there are coats with the same features as the previous coat, but with a thin layer of merino wool or polar fleece at the chest. An example would be the Extend of Bjorn Daehlie.

The warmest coats

Coats a little warmer are completely windbreaker type (no net) and have more insulation (merino wool or polar). Some of the warmer coats are further insulated at the front of the body and have a breathable windproof fabric at the back. There are also isolated coats in full, such as Swix's Bodo children's coat.

After finding the desired level of insulation, you must find the right size. Usually, the cross-country ski jackets are fitted enough to keep the heat close to the body. However, it is important to be able to move your arms, as you usually do on skis!

Jackets

Jackets (or sleeveless coats) are very popular with skiers! On colder winter days, they offer a warmer layer. Since they protect the more chilly parts of the body, in the fall and spring, they can be used as a cross-country ski coat. An example is Bjorn Daehlie's Endurance Jacket.

Note that all our cross-country ski jackets are windproof and made of synthetic fabrics.
